About this game

Skateboarding's head-to-head game format is called SKATE — a trick-for-trick elimination game identical in spirit to basketball's HORSE. One skater sets a trick; the other must land it or earn a letter. First to spell S-K-A-T-E loses.

The game today

The objective

Force your opponent to spell S-K-A-T-E by setting tricks they cannot replicate.

Rules as played today

  • 1The challenger skater performs a trick first; the other skater must attempt to land the exact same trick
  • 2If the second skater lands the trick cleanly, no letter is awarded and the roles can switch or continue
  • 3If the second skater fails (bails), they earn the next letter of SKATE — starting with S, then K, A, T, E
  • 4The game continues with riders trading trick-setting duties; any agreed trick is valid
  • 5First skater to spell S-K-A-T-E (accumulate 5 bailed tricks) is eliminated — the other skater wins
  • 6Game ON tracks each trick set, trick landed, and letter earned so spectators can follow the SKATE score live
