About this game

Fencing is an Olympic combat sport using one of three weapons: foil, épée, or sabre. Competitors score points by touching the opponent with the weapon's tip or blade.

Rules as played today

  • 1Three weapons with distinct target areas: foil (torso), épée (whole body), sabre (upper body)
  • 2Foil and sabre use 'right of way' priority; épée awards touches to whoever lands first (or double touch)
  • 3Electronic scoring detects valid and invalid touches
  • 4Each bout has a 3-minute period; if tied after regulation, a 1-minute sudden-death period with random priority
  • 5Yellow card for minor violations; red card for serious violations (1 touch penalty); black card = disqualification
